Egyptian Woman Activist Exposed Her Body To Protest Repression Tags: Aliaa Magda Elmahdy Egypt News Northern Africa News Sexual News
Aliaa Magda ElmahdyIn a country where nudity is highly frowned upon, and women exist behind veils and headscarves, an Egyptian activist and blogger has decided to use that as her weapon.  Aliaa Elmahdy , is a 20-year-old Egyptian who has decided to start a different kind of revolution for the womenfolk, using nakedness as her tool for political resistance.

WARNING: NUDE PHOTOS

In the last one week, she has caused uproar in the internets, with her blog amassing more that 1.5 million views in just two days. She posted nude pictures of herself on her blog in a bid to protest the limits on free expression in her country. In one of the pictures, and probably the one that has caused most uproar, Elmahdy, as she is popularly known, poses in only a pair of thigh-high stockings and some red patent leather shoes.

On her blog, which she calls "memories of a revolutionary: nude art," she wrote that she was practicing her freedom of expression. “I took my nude photo myself in my parents’ home,” she writes. The same photo appears on her blog a second time, but with a yellow rectangle covering her crotch. “The yellow rectangles on my eyes, mouth and sex organ resemble the censoring of our knowledge, expression and sexuality,” she writes.

Her rebellion and her quest for freedom have received numerous attacks and acceptance from a range of people, most of them Egyptians. Some Muslims have come forth, threatening her and challenging her actions, asking for the restriction of her freedom.

Her actions went viral on all social networks, and on twitter, the discussion took the tag #nudephotorevolution.

And she keeps writing on her blog, her recent message being “Put on trial the artists' models who posed nude for art schools until the early 70s, hide the art books and destroy the nude statues of antiquity, then undress and stand before a mirror and burn your bodies that you despise to forever rid yourselves of your sexual hang-ups before you direct your humiliation and chauvinism and dare to try to deny me my freedom of expression”

She is however massively supported by many women; as it was seen on Saturday when dozens of Israeli women decided enough is enough, stripping off their clothes to show solidarity with the Egyptian blogger. The 40 Israelis posed for a group photo, but did not fully display their intimate parts like Elmahdy.

"Girls, let's give the world a good reason to see the unique beauty of Israeli women," Tepler wrote on the Facebook event page that was inviting women to the photo shoot. "Regardless of whether they are Jewish, Arab, straight or Lesbian – because here, as of now, it doesn't matter. (…) Let us show the doubters that our international discourse doesn't depend on governments."

The participants were photographed holding a sign that read, "Love without Limits," and "Homage to Aliaa Elmahdi. Sisters in Israel."

Elmahdy dates a controversial Egyptian blogger who is said to have spent 4 years in prison for a blog that he put up, insulting Islam and calling Mubarak a "symbol of tyranny”.

The nude photo activist, even amidst the insults and the threats isn’t flinching. She intends to keep the fight going. Elmahdy, who labels herself as an atheist, has things to say to her insulters "Get rid of your sexual complexes for good before directing your abuses towards me or deny me the right of freedom of expression."

And also 25 to 30 Israeli women gathered together and also posted nude on a single shoot photo just to show their support.

Sierra Loene Illegal Timber Business Exposes Reports Sorious Samura Tags: Sierra Loene News Business News African News Stealing Africa's Resources Newsletters2011 Western Africa News Timber Sorious Samura Africa Journalists
In this edition of Africa Investigates, reporter Sorious Samura exposes the high level corruption that is stripping his Sierra Leone bare. On November 23, 2011, Al Jazeera ran a detailed report produced by the noted Sierra Leonean journalist Sorious Samura, directly implicating Vice President Sumana and business associates Alex Mansaray and Momoh Konte in the illicit sale of timber export licences.

The report contained undercover video footage of Sumana speaking with licence applicants in his office, his associates openly discussing the payment of bribes to Sumana to facilitate rapid processing of licences, and then receiving cash from the Al Jazeera team for the purpose.

The report highlighted the fact that the illicit arrangements were being concluded on the very day when a ban on hardwood timber exports from Sierra Leone was to take effect, and Vice President Sumana is seen, in the video footage, assuring the journalists that implementation of the ban was being "delayed". Sumana later reportedly admitted to Al Jazeera that Mansaray and Konte were well known to him, but that he knew nothing about their collection of cash on his behalf. Sierra Leone's cabinet was reported to be meeting in special session about the Al Jazeera sting operation.

The attention of the Government of Sierra Leone has been drawn to a documentary programme aired by Al Jazeera English in its current series entitled “Africa Investigates”. In the meantime, the public is assured that Government will fully address the matters aired in the programme. In line with its accountability policy, Government will undertake additional stringent measures to forestall any future breaches of its environmental and conservation policies to protect and sustain the country’s biodiversity.
At a special meeting at State House on 24th November 2011, the President reiterated government’s national and international environmental obligations while emphasizing the need for maintaining the ban on uncontrolled logging.
Once more, Government wishes the public to know that any breach of the Law by any person, irrespective of status, will meet with the full force of the law.

South Africa's Capital City, Pretoria to Get an African Name Tags: south Africa News African News LocaL News Southern Africa News
South Africa's capital Pretoria will be renamed Tshwane by the end of 2012, with main roads also given names of anti-apartheid leaders, the city's mayor said Tuesday. The ruling African National Congress has for years sought to rename the capital, currently named after white Afrikaner hero Andries Pretorius, who defeated a 10,000-strong Zulu army in 1838.

The name Tshwane has already been given to the municipality of 2.5 million people that includes Pretoria and nearby areas.

The government already uses Tshwane to refer to the capital, despite strong resistance from the city's white population.

"When we say we want to change the name of the city to Tshwane and replace the street names with names of our struggle heros, they talk about how much it costs," Mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa said in the Pretoria News.

"We are going to be resolute and stubborn in ensuring that our history is recorded correctly, because our brave heros paid the ultimate price," he said.

The name changes will affect streets named after Afrikaner heros and apartheid-era dignitaries, but also Church Street, the city's main artery.

Many of South Africa's cities are in the process of changing their names, with several adopting the sometimes confusing compromise of giving the municipality a new name while the main city retains the old one.

Port Elizabeth is now part of Nelson Mandela Bay, while Bloemfontein sits inside the Mangaung municipality. Some have completely shed their former names, with the northern city of Pietersburg now known as Polokwane.

Pastor Burns 11yrs Old Boy With Electric Iron For Stealing 200Naira Tags: Nigeria News Western Africa News Local News
A self-acclaimed man of God, Pastor Chukwudi Ibe, of Divine Power Ministry in Onitsha, is currently cooling his feet in a police cell over gross abuse of his ward. The pastor, with a hot electric iron, had inflicted severe burns on the 11-year-old boy, identified as Friday, who he accused of stealing N200 and keeping bad company.

According to a concerned neighbor who alerted the police, the victim went through hell in the hands of his guardian and wife.

He said that he was maltreated everyday after which he was chained and locked up in the house until evening when the couple returned from work to start another round of torture.

He further said that boy did not go to school but was forced to do all manner of job that a child of his age could not naturally do.

Speaking to newsmen, the pastor confirmed burning the victim with hot iron but claimed it was a measure intended to make him desist from stealing.

“I had to burn him with hot iron so that he will see the mark on his body and stop stealing,”he insisted.

Ibe, who did not show any remorse for his action, stated that his wife chained the lad everyday to prevent him from straying into the neighborhood, adding that each time he was not chained, he always stayed out late into the night.

The wife, who said the victim is her elder sister’s child, claimed she was not aware that her husband was burning the child with hot iron.

A policeman at the Central Police Station, Onitsha, who pleaded anonymity, said that they got a distress call from a concerned citizen that a man was about to kill his ward, stating that the police swiftly responded and arrested the suspect and the wife.

However, when contacted, the Divisional Police Officer, Central Police Station, Yusuf Abdul, said he was yet to be officially briefed about the matter.
