Cameroon jails men over gay sex Tags: Cameroon News African Gay Gossip This Is Not Africa
Three men in Cameroon have been sentenced to five years in prison for homosexual acts, which are illegal in the central African nation. Two of the accused were in court in the capital, Yaounde, but a third man was sentenced in absentia as he had jumped bail.

Police said the men were arrested for having oral sex in a car.

They denied the allegations and their lawyer Alice Nkom told the BBC they were arrested for looking feminine.

"How can people be jailed just for dressing like women?" she said, adding that her clients would appeal.

"This is really an embarrassment for Cameroon," said Ms Nkom who also runs Cameroon's Association for the Defence of Homosexuals.

At the start of the trial, she told the BBC the case was a "crime of fashion, not homosexuality".

The BBC's Randy Joe Sa'ah in Yaounde says homophobia is widespread in Cameroon, as in most African countries.

'Homophobic innuendos'

He says as well as the five-year jail term, the men were each fined 200,000 CFA francs (about $400; £260) - both the maximum penalties for homosexual acts in Cameroon.

One of men's other lawyers, Michel Togue, said it was a bad ruling and he accused the judge of peppering the hearing with homophobic innuendos, AFP news agency reports.

The two men who were in court were denied bail in August. The third defendant was granted bail after their arrest in July and never appeared in court for the trial.

Amnesty International has said Cameroon's homosexuality law is draconian and discriminatory and should be scrapped.

"Amnesty International considers these men to be prisoners of conscience who are being punished solely because of their perceived sexual orientation," Amnesty's Central Africa campaigner Jean-Eric Nkurikiye told the BBC in a statement.

"The use of criminal law to punish private sexual activity between consenting adults contravenes international human rights laws that Cameroon has signed and ratified."

Our reporter says it is not common for men to be taken to court over homosexual acts but in March, a man was jailed for three years on such charges.

Homosexual acts are banned in most African countries. In neighbouring Nigeria, MPs are currently debating proposed legislation to tighten homosexuality laws, including a ban on same-sex marriages.

Gambia: Ecowas observers boycott 'unfair poll' Tags: Gambia News African Elections African News Western African News AfricanElections2011
The Gambia does not have a political environment conducive for free and fair presidential elections to be held, the West African regional body has said. Ecowas said that for this reason it was not sending election observers to monitor Thursday's poll.

Its fact-finding mission found intimidation and an unacceptable level of media control by the ruling party.

President Yahya Jammeh seized power in a coup in 1994 and has won three widely criticised elections since then.

He has been accused of intolerance to both criticism and dissent in the small West African country which is a popular tourist destination.

The chairman of Gambia's Independent Electoral Commission, Mustapha Carayol, has reacted angrily to the Ecowas decision.

"The allegations are all lies," he told the BBC.

'Cowed by repression'
Mr Jammeh, 46, faces Ousainou Darboe, leader of the United Democratic Party, and Hamat Bah, who is being backed by a coalition of four opposition parties.

"The preparations and political environment for the said election are adjudged by the commission not to be conducive for the conduct of free, fair and transparent polls," the 15-state West African bloc said in a statement.

It said its investigations found "an opposition and electorate cowed by repression and intimidation".

Ahead of the presidential poll in 2006, Ecowas urged the opposition not to boycott the elections and endanger the "democratisation of the country".

Mr Jammeh's government has been criticised by international rights groups for its attitude to civil liberties, especially freedom of the press.

Correspondents say there are very few posters for the opposition candidates around the country.

Giant campaign billboards can be seen in the capital, Banjul, reading that Mr Jammeh is a "master peace maker and champion nation builder", AFP news agency reports.

Drogba may become another diamond in Russia - Anzhi squad

Chelsea star forward Didier Drogba has been named the next transfer goal of the big-spending Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala. The English paper Daily Mail claims Anzhi owner Suleiman Kerimov is ready to offer the 33-year-old Ivorian as much as 16 million euro per year. The talks are expected to resume in January 2012, when the winter transfer window opens.

Drogba’s contract with the Blues expires next summer. The Ivorian is willing to prolong the agreement for two more years, while the club plans to keep the player for only one more year.

According to the Russian Itar-Tass news agency, the striker himself has expressed a desire to stay in London, adding that he is ready to fight for a place in the starting line-up. But given Anzhi’s ambitions nothing can be ruled out completely.

In order to hook the African star, though, Anzhi will have to face competition from AC Milan.

Anzhi, who currently sit eighth in the Russian Premier League, are expected to make a stir on the transfer market this winter.

Apart from a number of stars on the pitch, the club has reportedly been linked with two big coaching names – Marcelo Lippi and, most recently, with Guus Hiddink.

Innocent is a fantastic father and I must give him kudos for that,he is crazy about all the kids he has.
He just strives to be there for everybody and he is not doing badly at all.
The relationship that exists between us now is the daddy and mummy relationship to our daughter and that is the truth.
I have no regrets that our relationship is not leading to marriage.Sometimes things come differently, but there are some things you cannot control, that does not mean you should regret it.So,I am cool.
But about marriage,no comment but God knows my husband.I don’t have any regret because I am counting my blessings.
