Didier Drogba Scores his first two goals for Shanghai Shenhua

Two weeks after making his Chinese Super League debut, Didier Drogba scored his first goal for Shanghai Shenhua in today’s match against Hangzhou Greentown.

It probably won’t make the $ 300,000-a-week striker’s career highlight reel, but it’s certainly an important milestone for the man who moved to China for the challenge, not the money.

Shanghai Shenhua may be enjoying the services of Drogba and his former Chelsea cohort Nicolas Anelka, but they currently languish in 12th place of the Chinese Super League with ten games left to play.

Drogba to arrive in China on Saturday, July 14

SHANGHAI, China – Football star Didier Drogba will arrive in China on Saturday to take up his new role at Shanghai Shenhua, his club said, amid high hopes he can reignite the 13th-placed team’s season.

Drogba announced last month he had signed with the big-spending Chinese club until 2014, joining his former Chelsea teammate Nicolas Anelka who started with the team in January. The Ivory Coast international will arrive on Saturday morning and meet fans at a match against third-ranked Beijing Guoan that evening, Shenhua said in a statement on Tuesday.

A Shenhua official told AFP that Drogba would not play on Saturday. Shenhua has an away game against Guangzhou Fuli on July 21 but there is speculation Drogba might only take to the field for the first time in a friendly match against Manchester United on July 25.

Shenhua is reportedly paying 200,000 pounds ($314,000) a week to Drogba, 34, who is fresh from leading Chelsea to their long-awaited victory in the Champions League.
However neither side has confirmed his salary.

Despite having Anelka, Shenhua has won just three matches out of 16 in the Chinese Super League, which has 16 clubs.

Shenhua are one of several Chinese football clubs to have gone on a spending spree on foreign players and managers in a bid to raise their game, as the league attempts to shrug off years of damaging corruption scandals.

After a poor start to the season, however, Shenhua sacked French coach Jean Tigana and replaced him with former Argentina national manager Sergio Batista, after briefly naming Anelka as “player-coach”.

Batista said shortly after Drogba’s signing was announced that he was hopeful Shenhua could climb into the top three by season’s end in November.

Drogba signs with Chinese club - Shanghai Shenhua

Chelsea and Ivory Coast idol Didier Drogba on Wednesday sealed a two-and-a-half-year deal with Shanghai Shenhua, becoming the biggest recruit so far to China's ambitious Super League.

The announcement ends months of speculation about the move, in which the striker will become China's best paid player with weekly pay of 200,000 pounds ($314,000), according to reports, and join ex-Chelsea team-mate Nicolas Anelka.

"Today I can inform you that I have signed with Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua FC for a two-and-a-half year deal (until the end of 2014)," Drogba, 34, said on his website. "I will fly out to join up with the squad in July."

Shanghai Shenhua posted a picture of Drogba wearing the team's blue shirt - similar to Chelsea's - on its website, and confirmed the deal in a brief statement.

Alongside Anelka, who joined Shenhua in January, Drogba will form a feared strike-force in the Chinese league, which has shrugged off years of corruption scandals with a spending spree on coaches and players.

Reigning champions Guangzhou Evergrande are spearheaded by imported South American talent, and they pulled off a coup by snaring the services of World Cup-winning Italian coach Marcello Lippi in May.

Shenhua, bankrolled by colourful video-game tycoon Zhu Jun, are in need of a boost as they currently lie 12th of 16 teams, with just three wins in 13 games this season.

And Drogba underlined his reputation as one of the English Premiership's most lethal strikers with a match-winning role in last month's Champions League final.

The imposing target man said he had received other offers but Shanghai "is the right move for me at this time", adding that he was encouraged by Chelsea's promotional visit to China last year.

"I am looking forward to a new challenge and to experiencing a new culture, and I am excited about the new developments in the Chinese Super League," he said.

"When Chelsea went to China last year, we had a great time and I met some amazing fans."

He added: "I hope to help promote Chinese football around the world and further improve the links between China and Africa."

Drogba will hope for a smoother start in Shanghai than Anelka, who was disaffected by management changes after coach Jean Tigana's quickfire sacking in April, and reportedly threatened to quit the club.

Fans hailed the move, Shao Chen writing on one of China's popular microblogging sites: "Today is such a good day. Anelka and Drogba, what terrifying strikers! Shenhua are the champions."

But others warned that buying big-name players may not help the development of Chinese players, who have repeatedly failed to make an impact on the international stage.

Drogba scored 157 goals in 341 appearances since joining Chelsea from Marseille in 2004. At Shenhua, he will work under former Argentine coach Sergio Batista, who joined the club late last month.

Last week, two former chiefs of China's football association were jailed for more than 10 years and four ex-internationals also received lengthy terms, in the climax of a major crackdown on football corruption.

Drogba to leave Chelsea: report

Didier Drogba has confirmed he plans to quit Chelsea following his Champions League final heroics, according to reports in France. The striker has been quoted saying he informed his team-mates of his decision during the club's open-top bus parade on Monday after leading them to the greatest moment in their history on Saturday night.

"We will no longer be together next season," the 34-year-old said in quotes attributed to France Football magazine.

Drogba, who has reportedly already agreed a deal to join Shanghai Shenhua when his Chelsea contract expires this summer, is said to have admitted he struggled to get the words out and burst into tears.

He went on to say: "As I decided to leave, I wanted to tell them straight in the eye. Except that I could not do it. They made me crack.

"Even though it's been three years since I said I wanted to leave, I find it hard to admit that it's over with this club - especially as I did not feel like this.
"But I could not see myself sitting on the bench to watch others play when the club plans to set up a new team.

"So that's it - I am preparing for my leap into the unknown. It's going to be another adventure."

Drogba's departure would put a dampener on the jubilant Champions League celebrations of most of Chelsea's players and fans, who engaged in chants of, "Didier Drogba, we want you to stay", during the parade.

The Blues hierarchy had said they planned to sit down with the Ivory Coast star after Saturday's final in a bid to agree a contract extension. Whether they still make an 11th-hour attempt to keep him in the wake of his reported quotes remains to be seen.

Rihanna joined in with Chelsea FC's celebrations after they won the Champions League on Saturday (19th May), by partying with striker Didier Drogba, who has now announced he is leaving the club after eight years.

The star tweeted a series of snaps of her posing with the Ivory Coast international, with The Sun reporting RiRi 'hunted down' the West London team at London club Boujis after watching Jay-Z and Kanye West's Watch The Throne show at the O2.

A source told the tabloid: "Rihanna joined Didier, Jose Bosingwa, Salomon Kalou, Michael Essien and Raul Meireles and held court on their table.

“The players were chuffed to meet her but she bonded most with Didier and was dancing away with him.”

The 24-year old Bajan accompanied a picture of herself and Drogba with the message: "THEE DIDIER DROGBA #thereisaGod.”

Earlier this week, RiRi revealed that she had missed her flight out of the UK on Saturday, after partying too hard at after Jigga and Yeezy's first WTT gig.

She took to Twitter to tell her followers: "So ummm.... I'm supposed to be on a plane rt now! JayZ saved me!!!!! I got an extra day off."

Rihanna was later seen landing a smacker on R.I.P. singer Rita Ora's cheek at the party - held at London's Dskrkt club - dismissing rumours of a feud between the pair.
